Brakes
Front brakes
If braking the front wheels, make sure they pull evenly.

Rear brakes
If the trolley has two rear wheels, put brakes on both.
Rear wheel brakes can be pretty hairy in the wet or under hard braking.
They have been known to completely demolish a tyre in one stop.

Foot actuated car tyre
A foot actuated piece of car tyre, pushed onto the road, is the only brake allowed at some derbies.
In it's simplest form this is reasonably effective.  With leverage it can be very effective, especially if it is positioned so that there is plenty of weight over it.
If used in conjunction with rear wheel brakes the stopping power can be awesome.

The photo shows a brake that has had one end worn down and has now been turned around to use the other end.

Braking tips
Good brakes may keep you out of trouble, but don't smoke up your tyres until the last race.

After you have crossed the finish line, keep a straight line while braking.  A slower trolley with poor brakes may wipe you out if you swerve all over the track.
