To finish first, first, you have to finish

The quickest route to the the finish line is the shortest.  Make sure that you can steer your trolley.

After you have crossed the finish line, keep a straight line while braking.  A slower trolley with poor brakes may wipe you out of the rest of the day's racing if you swerve all over the track.

Good brakes may be fun and keep you out of trouble, but don't smoke up your tyres until the last race.

Have plenty of spares.  You can't win a race parked in the pits with a flat tyre or bent wheel.

If your trolley has fragile bits, keep a close eye on spectators and helpers, they can ruin your day.
Some helpers seem to think that trolleys are indestructible and only have to last for the day anyway.
We have had more damage done to our trolleys by inquisitive spectators and over-enthusiastic helpers than our drivers have caused in several crashes.

Practise.

To make your trolley faster
Take off all the bits that slow it down, put on all the bits that make it faster.
You didn't really think I was going to tell you the answer......did you??
