Organisation
Rules
Design your rules to suit your hill and to keep racing safe and fair.

When designing your rules, be aware of the possible effects.

There are very few rules that are common to all trolley derbies.

Below are two that I feel are essential for safety and for the continuation of the sport as we know it.

"Drivers shall not race in a 'head first' position"
This rule is very seldom used.  This position is the most dangerous way to race a trolley.  It is also a very tempting way to build a quick trolley (for reasons I am not going to go into).
It is not fair that sensible constructors, who regard safety as a higher priority to speed, be penalised for not building a potential neck breaker.

"No form of propulsion other than gravity to be used"
I have only seen this rule used at the best of the "Gravity Drag" type derbies.

Two methods of using human power are currently being ignored by many organisers.  Some drivers even leave a strip of rubber on the start line.  Others can use use their steering to power them up quite a steep hill.  If you don't want the winner's podium to look like a Body Building competition I would suggest that you include and enforce this rule.
